Early Life and Education

Angela Merkel was born Angela Dorothea Kasner on July 17, 1954, in Hamburg, West Germany. She spent her early years in Templin, East Germany, where her father was a Protestant minister. Merkel studied physics at the University of Leipzig and earned a doctorate in quantum chemistry in 1986.

Political Career

Merkel entered politics in the late 1980s, joining the Democratic Awakening movement. She served as a member of the Volkskammer, the East German parliament, from 1990 to 1994. After German reunification, Merkel joined the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and was elected to the Bundestag, the German federal parliament, in 1990.

Chancellor of Germany

In 2005, Merkel became the first female chancellor of Germany. She served in this role until 2021, making her the longest-serving chancellor in German history. During her tenure, she oversaw significant events such as the global financial crisis, the Eurozone crisis, and the European migrant crisis.
